Poole is Dorset’s largest town has a harbour with a miraculously untouched 18th century atmosphere. Much of the tremendous natural harbour, about 95 miles round, seems little changes since the days of pirates – one almost expects to meet stocking-capped smugglers at the next corner.
There are many 18th century and early 19th century houses, including delightful old inns like The Angel, and The Old Customs House, rebuilt in 1813 after a previous building had been burnt down.
A long line of harbour offices and ships’ chandlers appears little changed since the days of prosperous timber trading with Newfoundland in the 18th and 19th centuries. Poole Pottery on the quayside is open to the public. There are two golf courses and from Compton Acres gardens there is a superb view over the harbour.
